160 years ago, Biggingee Sorabjee Poochee carried his camera, glass plates, photographic chemicals, processing equipment and a tent for use as a darkroom up Limestone Hill. Selecting the best vantage point on the limestone ridge, Poochee took a series of five photographs. Back at his studio, his careful positioning of his tripod had paid off; the five photographs lined up, creating a panoramic view of Ipswich.

This was not the first time Limestone Hill had been used to capture the story of Ipswich’s rapid transformation into the Modern Athens. Each painting, photograph and lithograph that took advantage of this elevation captured a view of home that would be cherished by locals, and distributed far and wide, encouraging newcomers to call Ipswich home.

Join Picture Ipswich Digital Archivist and Historian Melanie Rush as she explores the nineteenth century views of Ipswich from Limestone Hill and discovers how these visions of a new home were used to entice investment and migration.
